Bi Hongsheng, MD, is director of Affiliated Eye Hospital of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine, dean of Shandong University of Traditional Chinese Medicine Medical College of Optometry and Ophthalmology, dean of Shandong Academy of Eye Disease Prevention and Therapy, dean of Shandong Academy of Children and Adolescent Health and Myopia Prevention and Therapy, chairman of the Ophthalmic Specialty Committee of Chinese Association of Integrative Medicine, deputy chief of the Blindness Prevention Expert Guidance Group of the National Health Commission, vice chairman of the Ophthalmologist Branch of Chinese Medical Doctor Association, vice chairman of the Ophthalmology Branch of Chinese Preventive Medicine Association, member of the standing committee of the Ophthalmology Branch of Chinese Medical Association doubling as deputy group leader of the Cataract Group, and expert of the Health China Action Promotion Committee of the State Council. He serves as an editorial board member of authoritative ophthalmology journals such as the Chinese Journal of Ophthalmology and the Chinese Journal of Optometry and Vision Science. He has presided over 49 scientific research projects at national, provincial, and ministerial levels, and was awarded the second prize of the National Scientific and Technological Progress and the first prize of the Provincial Scientific and Technological Progress. He has been awarded the honorary titles of State Council Government Special Allowance Expert, National Innovation and Pioneering Award, and National May 1st Labor Medal.

Prof. Bi has been involved in ophthalmology research and clinical work for a long time.  He has published 574 academic papers in Lancet, Nature, and other authoritative SCI journals and core journals. He was the first to develop 32 new technologies in China, including laser cataract surgery, and has made outstanding achievements in the clinical and research fields of precise refractive cataract and complex cataract, optometry and myopia prevention and control, the use of ophthalmic microsurgery to solve complex and difficult eye diseases, and the combination of traditional Chinese and Western medicine in ophthalmology, with a number of research results reaching the international level.

Prof. Bi upholds the concept of “globalization” of ophthalmic surgery, and over the years has successfully treated hundreds of thousands of patients from the U.S., Canada, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, and other countries, as well as 30 provinces and municipalities in China, making great social impact, achieving economic benefits, and making outstanding contributions to the cause of the prevention and treatment of blindness.
