ZHANG Xiulan

Prof Xiulan Zhang, MD, PhD, glaucoma specialist, is currently at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-sen University, China. She was among the Top 30 and Top 50 Experts in Worldwide Glaucoma Expertscape 2019-2021 and was listed among the Top 100 Most Influential People in Ophthalmology Power List in 2014. She is a board member of APGS and APOIS. She was awarded the Distinguished Service Award of APAO in 2021 and the Prestigious Achievement Award of Ophthalmic Image Analysis in 2019.

Prof Zhang has published 170 SCI articles, with H-index of 42. She oversees an extraordinarily productive glaucoma clinical research team that has impacted diagnostics and management of myopia and glaucoma surgery. She organized and oversees an international team of glaucoma experts to develop a novel classification system of visual field defects in highly myopic eyes (Ophthalmology 2022 Jul). She created iGlaucoma, an integrated intelligent glaucoma screening platform based on AI and multimodal imaging. Her team has innovated and developed an app (https://apps.apple.com/cn/app/iglaucoma/id1490088857) for visual field diagnosis (NPJ Digital Medicine 2020), a multimodal diagnostic algorithm (Ophthalmology 2022 Feb), a digital gonioscopy system (Ophthalmology 2022 Jan), and a system of glaucoma incidence and progression (Journal of Clinical Investigation 2022 Jun). Prof Zhang also founded a massive annotated public database “iChallenge” (https://ichallenges.grand-challenge.org/). The database covers major blinding diseases including glaucoma, AMD, PM, and DR.

Prof Zhang has published four self-authored books through the People’s Medical Publishing House, and the Chinese translations of 10 books of the WGA Consensus Series. She has given invited lectures at 698 domestic and overseas meetings.
